Viewings

A viewing is a time for family and close friends to spend quiet moments with their loved one before burial or cremation.

Time together, if you need it

Many people find comfort in spending quiet time with their loved one before the funeral. Others prefer to remember them as they were in life. There is no right or wrong decision. We’re here to explain the options and support whatever you decide.

What is a viewing?

A viewing is an opportunity to spend time with your loved one before the funeral service or cremation. It often takes place in a Turnbull chapel or viewing room, but can also be arranged at home or in a place of worship if that feels more fitting for your family or culture.

You’ll have access to a calm, private space. Our mortuary and care teams will prepare your loved one with great respect, and your funeral director will be nearby if you need anything or have questions.

If you’d like to personalise the viewing, we can help you:

  • bring in photos, flowers or special belongings

  • play favourite music or hymns

  • set up the room to reflect your loved one’s culture, faith or personality.

How to prepare for a viewing

Before the viewing, it can help to think about the atmosphere you’d like. Some families choose to:

  • bring photos, letters or personal items

  • set up a small memory table or display

  • play soft music or hymns that are meaningful

  • place a keepsake, letter or drawing in the coffin.

Others prefer simplicity, quiet and just being present. If you’re unsure, your Turnbull funeral director can talk you through what other families have found helpful and help you decide what feels right for you.
