Meet Jarrod Howard, location manager at Turnbull Funerals

How long have you been a funeral arranger?

I have been drawn to the funeral industry since I was young, with a quirky anecdote to share. During a family trip to Sovereign Hill, I even obtained a novelty poster offering my funeral services as a child. While most of my non-funeral employment has been in wholesale distribution or federal government roles, my journey in the funeral industry began in 2007.

Initially, I started working in the industry by maintaining and detailing vehicles. However, in 2009, an exciting opportunity arose for me to join the Turnbull Funerals team as a funeral arranger. After a brief hiatus from the industry, I returned in 2018 as a Location Manager. This progression has allowed me to deepen my expertise and take on more responsibilities within the field.

What do you like about being a funeral arranger?

What I truly appreciate about being a funeral arranger is the opportunity to guide and educate families as they navigate the various choices available to them. Collaborating with them, we can create a meaningful funeral service that honors their loved one's life. This aspect of my role is immensely rewarding.

One of the privileges of being a funeral arranger is being entrusted with strangers' stories, gaining insights into their lives. It's an honor to listen to tales of their first love, their travels, their achievements, and even their struggles. These personal narratives remind me that everyone is remarkable in their own unique way.

Making a difference during such a difficult time is of utmost importance to me. I strive to provide support and assistance, aiming to ease the burden and bring comfort to families facing loss. Being able to play a part in making that challenging period a little easier is truly fulfilling.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

In my spare time, I find great joy in spending quality time with my family and friends. I also enjoy pottering around in my garden, tending to plants and immersing myself in nature's beauty.

One of my ongoing projects is the gradual restoration of my '79 Chrysler Regal. It's a labour of love, and I enjoy dedicating time to bring back its former glory, one step at a time. The process of reviving this classic car is not only a hobby but also a rewarding journey of craftsmanship.

Whenever the opportunity arises, I love visiting Bruny Island for a relaxing weekend getaway. Kevin, our beloved miniature schnauzer, loves walks along Adventure Bay Beach. It's a special place where we can all unwind and recharge our spirits.

What’s the most remarkable funeral you’ve ever arranged?

Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of arranging numerous remarkable funerals that have left a lasting impact. One such occasion was a funeral for a beloved school teacher, where her young students actively participated by decorating the coffin with their heartfelt artwork. Witnessing the profound connection and involvement of the children made it an incredibly touching and memorable service.

Another exceptional funeral stands out in my memory—a shearers service held in the paddock adjacent to the shearing shed. During the reflection music, the atmosphere became so spirited that those gathered spontaneously began dancing, creating a beautiful and unexpected tribute to the life of the departed.

I recall another occasion where the hearse was escorted by a fleet of concrete trucks, symbolizing the deceased's lifelong dedication to the construction industry.
